01 — The brand01

Owner-run, on black sand, under a very dark sky.

Terra Nera opened in 2021 on Isla Ferrera, a small island west of La Palma: forty-two suites across a lava field, a vineyard planted in ash, a black-sand cove, a restaurant called Ceniza and an observatory at fourteen hundred metres. It is run by its owners, a hotelier and an astronomer, and belongs to no chain.

The voice is unhurried and sensory and precise about light and weather: first sun on the terrace at 07:10 in June.

02 — The challenge02

Win the booking before the guest opens a comparison site.

Direct bookings are the objective, which means the site had to be more persuasive than an aggregator and simpler to book on. The audience is design-literate couples booking four to seven nights. The story had to carry the atmosphere; the booking journey had to carry the transaction; the two had to feel like one thing.

03 — Creative direction03

The palette is a clock.

Dawn is rose-grey. Noon is salt white against basalt. Dusk is ochre and ember. Night is near-black with a warm lamp. Sea green runs through all of it. The document’s background and text colours are variables interpolated by scroll, so the navigation, the hour indicator and the booking bar change with the day.

Cormorant Garamond sets the display at large sizes and light weights; Hanken Grotesk reads and labels. Imagery was rendered in layers under one direction: wide, horizontal, low sun, tiny figures against landscape, haze and grain.

04 — UX thinking04

A story that ends at the calendar.

The home page moves through six hours, each linking to the part of the site that hour is about: dawn to suites, morning to the island, noon to dining, afternoon to experiences, dusk to the observatory, night to booking. A booking bar stays within reach throughout.

The booking journey is four steps with a real two-month calendar, per-night prices, live totals, extras and a confirmation, plus a panel that tells the guest what the light will be like on their dates.

05 — Signature interaction05

One day on the island.

Each hour is a full-height scene of separately rendered layers, sky, far, mid and near, moving at different rates, with a caption that arrives like a subtitle. A fixed indicator counts the minutes from 06:40 to 22:00 as you scroll. The palette interpolates continuously between the hours so that dusk arrives rather than switches.

An optional ambience, generated in Web Audio from filtered noise and off by default, changes character with the hour. The booking journey’s light preview computes sunrise and sunset for the island’s latitude and shows the palette strip for the chosen season.

06 — Motion06

Slow crossfades of light. Parallax with true depth.

The day-cycle is the only large motion on the site. Layers travel between four and fourteen percent. Captions rise six pixels over seven hundred milliseconds. On touch under 768 pixels the layers are replaced by a single composed image; with reduced motion the palette snaps per section and nothing parallaxes.

07 — Technology07

Scroll-driven colour across the whole document.

Each scene declares its palette; a throttled scroll handler computes progress between scenes and writes interpolated custom properties to the root. Parallax layers are rendered separately with transparency and moved with transforms. The calendar, availability, pricing and light preview are computed client-side. Ambience is synthesised rather than loaded.

08 — Key screens08

Desktop and mobile.

Screens captured from the built site at 1440 and 390 pixels wide.

09 — Final experience09

A conceptual motion idea that is also a sales tool.

The finished site makes the guest live a day on the island before they book a week of them, and then makes the booking the easiest part.
