02How to instruct us

Four steps

  1. Telephone or write

Call the switchboard on +44 20 7405 2209 and ask for the practice, or use the form below. You do not need to know which partner you want; the clerks will decide, and if they are wrong the partner will pass you on within the day.

  2. A first conversation

Twenty minutes, without charge and without obligation. We will tell you whether you have a problem we can help with, roughly what it would cost, and roughly how long it would take. If another firm is better placed we will name one.

  3. Conflicts and identity

Before we can advise we run a conflict check and we must verify your identity under the money laundering regulations. For a company this usually takes a day; for an individual, an hour.

  4. The engagement letter

It sets out the scope of the work, who will do it, the hourly rates or the fixed fee, and the estimate. Nothing begins until it is signed and, in most cases, until a payment on account has cleared.

03Write to a partner

Answered within one working day

Please do not send confidential material with a first enquiry: until we have run a conflict check we cannot promise to keep it. A sentence about the problem is enough.

Nothing confidential, please.

Fees

Hourly rates run from £245 for a trainee to £790 for a senior partner. Fixed fees are available for defined pieces of work and we will offer one where we can estimate honestly.

Out of hours

For an injunction or a publication deadline, call the switchboard at any hour and ask for the duty partner.

04Complaints

Summary of the procedure

If you are unhappy with our work or our bill, tell the partner responsible first. Most complaints are resolved in that conversation. If it is not resolved, write to Miriam Sassoon, who handles complaints and who will not have worked on your matter.

We will acknowledge a written complaint within three working days, investigate it, and give you a written answer within eight weeks. If you are not satisfied with that answer, or if eight weeks pass, you may take the complaint to the Legal Ombudsman (PO Box 6167, Slough SL1 0EH) normally within six months of our final response and within one year of the act complained of. The Solicitors Regulation Authority deals separately with matters of professional conduct.

There is no charge for making a complaint, and doing so does not affect the conduct of your matter.
