Sixty-four hectares of former rice estate on the south bank, with twenty-two villas set well back from the water.
The estate came with 3 400 cork oaks, a drying shed, a jetty and a bird count. Ferro & Cunha surveyed the flood line before anything else was drawn, and every villa sits above it and behind the oaks, so that from a boat you see an estate and not a development. The old shed is now the clubhouse: a pool, six rooms for guests, and a kitchen that opens to the water.

Both villas are built around a court with the oaks kept in it. The estuary front holds the living rooms; the bedrooms sit behind, away from the morning sun and the noise of the water birds, which is considerable at six in the morning in October.

The same office as Comporta, working here with Studio Lindqvist, who did the interiors of the clubhouse and the four V5 villas. Anna Lindqvist spent a February on the estate and came back with a palette of six colours, all of them taken from the mud at low tide.
The villas are lower and longer than the Comporta houses because the estuary is flat and anything vertical here reads for a kilometre. The clubhouse keeps the old shed’s roof line, its brick floor and the two doors the rice was carried through.
