Nine houses lifted above the sand on posts, so the grass runs under them and the beach stays a beach.
The housesEvery house we have built has a terrace that faces west. Not for the view, though there is one, but for the hour between five and six when the light comes in low across the water and the limestone turns the colour of bread.
We build slowly. A house takes us two years, a place takes ten. The pines we plant in the first winter are taller than the roofs by the time the last plot is sold, and that is the point.
Thirty-eight per cent of every site is left as it was found: dune, sapal, cork. We draw the plan around what is already there, and then we draw it again until the houses disappear into it.
We show the houses in the late afternoon, on foot, one household at a time. Sofia Ribeiro will write back within a day with two dates. The sales suite in Comporta is open Thursday to Monday; Lisbon, by appointment.
